The Dark Judges: The Fall of Deadworld is the first book in a new series of collected trade paperbacks that chronicle both the origins of Deadworld itself and the Dark Judges. Judge Death and his cohort judges- Fear, Mortis, Fire, etc. are some of Judge Dredd’s worst and darkest enemies. They have tried many times to destroy Mega City One. Dredd and Anderson have always managed to save the city from their clutches, though often at a high price. Judge Death and his crew are trans-dimensional entities intent on wiping out all life. To them, simply being alive is the worst crime imaginable.
The Fall of Deadworld tells the story of a world almost identical to Judge Dredd’s as the blight of the Dark Judges falls upon it. The story is told through the eyes of a rogue, human judge named Fairfax and those of a family that he encounters while trying to flee the horrors consuming his world. The book captures all the awesomeness of a normal Judge Dredd tale while adding a very zombie apocalypse like element.
At the point where the book begins, Fairfax’s world is already in its last days and those who are left alive are either desperately attempting to fight back or merely struggling to stay alive themselves. His encounter with the family of civilians leaves him being the protector of a child who may turn out to be the key to stopping the Dark Judges.
This book is a high speed ride through a horrific landscape of death and carnage. It’s a very sad, violent, and powerful tale that can bounce from being intense action to tear jerking heartbreak in an instant. And in addition to the main storyline of the book, it also includes interludes that deal directly with the Dark Judges delving into their personal histories and experiences. If you’re a Judge Dredd fan or enjoy apocalyptic fiction, I can’t recommend it enough.
