Eric Larson, a.k.a. Eric Lodin.

WAYNESVILLE — Blue Ridge Books will host a reading by mystery author Eric Lodin at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 12, featuring the debut of "Soft Hearts: A Rett Swinson Mystery."

The novel explores a Halloween homicide and its investigation by a 40-something soon-to-be divorcee who is fighting a drinking problem.

Soft Hearts is driven by the strong personality of its amateur sleuth, Harriet “Rett” Swinson, who is closely modeled on the strong women Lodin has known in his life.

More books are planned — and its heroine may visit Haywood County. “You can bet at some point there will be an incident that brings Rett Swinson to the mountains. I spent too much time here not to draw on it,” the author said.

Eric Lodin is the pen name of Eric Larson, who lived in Maggie Valley with his family during the 2000s and ran a small multimedia company. Fiction writing is something Larson has done on the side continuously since college.

Blue Ridge Books is located at 428 Hazelwood Ave, Waynesville.
