A virtual program shedding light on the not-so-pretty history of WNC's first railroad in the 1880s will be held at 6 p.m. on April 13, hosted by the WNC Historical Association.

Part of the LitCafé series, the program will explore the historical fiction book The Road, which exposes the history of incarcerated laborers who toiled and sometimes perished completing the railroad.

The Road was written in 1967 by author John Ehle, who published 17 works of fiction and nonfiction throughout his career, shaping the depiction of WNC in several ways.

Join speakers Steve Little, the mayor of Marion, and Dr. Richard Starnes, history professor at Western Carolina University, for this virtual Zoom program, including a Q&A session.

Free for WNCHA members; $5 for others. Register online here to receive a link to the program. education@wnchistory.org.
