VIRTUAL — Catch a screening of the new WNC-produced documentary “The Spirits Still Move Them: Moonshining in the Mountains” online at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 24.
The film features moonshining stories that are heart-rending, funny and moving — and open a window into the soul of the Southern Appalachian world that’s rapidly vanishing.
Rather than the stereotypes of lazy, drunken mountaineers, moonshiners were some of the most entrepreneurial and creative farmers in a community who not only provided a public service but helped to put food on the table for themselves and their communities.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with a local moonshiner and the director, David Weintraub from the Center for Cultural Preservation. The livestream screening is $15 per person or $35 for a household.
