Help set the stage for a festive Haywood County Fair coming Aug. 26-29 with a decorating contest to spruce up the fairgrounds at the Smoky Mountain Event Center and show off your artistic talents.
There are two decorating contests on tap: a scarecrow contest for youth and a 5’x5’ display space that’s ideal for businesses, nonprofits and churches.
Wooden frames for the scarecrow contest are provided by the fairgrounds, and it’s up to kids to bring them to life. Simply dress up your wooden frame with a scarecrow outfit, add some accessories and return it to the fairgrounds when you’re done. The best part? You get to keep your scarecrow when the fair is over!
Include your name and phone number on an index card pinned securely to the back of the scarecrow for judging. Judges will award 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons, with participation ribbons for all. Open to ages 19 and under.
Scarecrow frames must be reserved in advance by calling the Smoky Mountain Event Center at 828-400-1704. The lumber for the frames is being generously donated by J-Creek Lumber.
Deck out a 5’x5’ garden space with a creative, artistic display that plays off the fair’s theme “Country Nights and Carnival Lights.” Each participant will be given a bale of hay and shock of corn to use in their display.
The displays can include a 2’x3’ sign, which is a great way to publicize the name of your business, church or organization to 15,000+ fairgoers over the course of the four-day fair run. 1st place gets $40, 2nd gets $30, 3rd gets $20 and honorable mention gets $10.
There’s a limited number of display spaces. Reserve your spot by calling the Smoky Mountain Event Center at 828-400-1704.
