The tumultuous world of college athletics can strip one of all normalcy and self identity. Maria Young, a star basketball player at TC Roberson and Limestone College, knows this firsthand. After exploring the subject in her memoir, Lost in a Game, local author Maria C. Young adapted the book into her first play Transition.

A staged reading of that play will stream online on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020, at 7:30 p.m. Young also directs the play, which stars Cortina Jenelle, Elizabeth Garland, Kasia Maatafale, and Tyron Young. Tickets and more information can be found at www.ashevilletheatre.org.

In Transition, Mali, a collegiate basketball star, is trying to navigate her sudden want to withdraw from the limelight and walk into the light of who she truly is; the problem is, she doesn’t know who that is. This premiere tells the story of her life, her acceptance, her trials, and most importantly, her triumphs. Will the journey break her, or will she emerge stronger than ever, ready to conquer life and all it brings?

Transition was originally slated for performances in 35below, but due to COVID closures and restrictions on gathering, it was postponed. It will now be filmed by videographer Adam McMillan and streamed online for one performance.

“We are still planning to do a full production of the show with a live audience in the future,” said Jenny Bunn, Marketing Director at Asheville Community Theatre. “But in the meantime, we are grateful to be partnering with Ria and her team for a creative way to share this show sooner rather than later.”

Transition is presented as part of Asheville Community Theatre’s Artistic Horizons program, a program that gives local artists the opportunity to pursue new creative paths in the theatre. Artistic Horizons features original work by new, emerging, or established writers who are expanding their craft to include playwriting, or productions helmed by first time directors who want to workshop a piece before committing to a full performance run.
