Come out and support Elder Abuse Awareness on June 17 and take a walk up and down Main Street in Waynesville. Free T-shirts for registered walkers.

The Center for Disease Control defines elder abuse as an intentional act, or failure to act, by a caregiver or another person in a relationship involving an expectation of trust that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older adult.

In fact, one in 10 Americans age 60 or older have experienced some form of elder abuse, and as many as 5 million older adults are abused every year, and the instances are rarely reported, according to the National Council on Aging (NCOA).
