Appalachian Folkways Series

Come join The Cradle of Forestry in celebration of the craft and skill of the Southern Appalachian mountains on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Set a spell on the porch of Commissary just as it was in 1902 or maybe throw some horseshoes in the shade of the King House as you listen to the gentle strum of the banjo. Stroll down to the garden and touch the plants growing there that provide food and medicine. Watch as local crafts people extract the dyes from our local plants for their wool to be used on our traditional loom.

During the Appalachian Folkways Series events, guests to The Cradle of Forestry will be able to visit with local crafters across a wide range of skills. From fiber arts to blacksmithing, visitors will have the chance to spend time with local practitioners of the crafts that have been a part of life in these mountains for generations.
