CLYDE — Fly fishermen can learn the art and science of tying their own flies or even building their own fly rod with two upcoming workshops at Haywood Community College.

Fly tying workshop

“Fly Tying 101” will be held Tuesday afternoons from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and run from June 8-July 27.

The hands-on course starts with the basics of fly tying and moves on to more advanced flies. The cost is $214 and includes a fly tying kit with tools and materials.

The instructor is Tommy Thomas, a local flyfishing guru and president of the Cataloochee Trout Unlimited chapter.

Rod workshop

A Fly Rod Making workshop will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, running from June 8-July 27.

Participants will build their own fly rod over the course of the workshop, with the option of a 9-foot graphite rod or 7-foot bamboo rod. Cost is $331, and an additional $150 for the bamboo rod option.
